Issue # 9 - THEME: ALTERNATIVE VISION

We are looking for work that uses alternative or experimental (in both digital and analogue) processes to create a photographic image. In essence the theme for this issue is conceptual, about how an image is constructed, or questions how we read/understand an image as opposed to what the image is necessarily depicting.

We are also open to any written work, reviews or essays, that may suit this theme.

Here is your chance to use your photography to help Japan recover through the Hotshoe Gallery and Architecture for Humanity.

Architecture for Humanity and Hotshoe are calling for submissions of photographs on the theme of Japan that will be exhibited for sale at “For Japan” to raise funds for the long term reconstruction of the earthquake/tsunami devastated region around Sendai. Photographers are invited to submit relevant images in a digital format (30cmx40cm 300 dpi Tiff file in Adobe 98) which will be printed by Metro Imaging free of charge.

For this theme we are looking for images of landscapes that have been physically altered by either natural or manmade interventions. Work that deals with the theme in a conceptual, political, historical or documentary style are of particular interest.

Remnants is a group of works that individually explore ideological or situational incidences; while coincidences are explored in the detail the works also operate in much the same way with each other on a broader scale. Where one work touches on empire building another will continue with an empire falling, or where a work takes on the mythology of the Greeks another will explore that of the Bible. A common thread throughout these works is how human beings have learned to deal with their own inventions, be they practical, absurd, sentimental or violent. Photographs and books become subjects for photographing, while an unusable guillotine made from household materials bears the name of the last person to be guillotined in France. Everything is linked somehow, through material, location or intention; Hughes’s world is one of hints and clues, objects that speak as visual riddles.
Ultimately, Remnants is an exhibition about quantifying time through the left-over’s of human endeavour. How we move through the ages is evident in the objects we leave behind. Like an archaeologist working in reverse, Hughes begins with an event, sources an artifact and documents it. What we are left with is another object, a photograph, and a remnant in itself.

8th Vevey International Photo Award and the 6th Vevey First Film Award

Festival Images is launching another round of its project competitions. Artists, film-makers and photographers have until April 15th 2011 to enter the 8th Vevey International Photo Award and the 6th Vevey First Film Award. The results of these projects will be previewed at the next festival in September 2012.
In May 2011, national and international film and photography professionals will choose the projects that will be supported by the festival.These competitions represent a unique form of support for contemporary original works, with a free choice of subject matter and genre.
The purpose of these competitions consists in providing crucial assistance for projects that have not been realised, in the form of grants that amount to up to CHF 40,000 (around EUR 30,000)...

Well it was a rather successful night for the old reliables at the Irish Web Awards 2010...music and theatre took the awards SuperMassiveBlackHole was nominated and shortlisted for.

Being a niche publication and especially one that is free, independent and relatively new to the scene we are proud to have at least been shortlisted. We'll let you all make up your minds as to the quality of the winners - but SuperMassiveBlackHole will keep on trucking whatever happens - bringing international photography to Ireland and from Ireland, like no one else does!

Submission fails - top 5 things NOT to do

We get quite a few submissions for the magazine, and a portion of them don't get very far in the process of deciding who gets into the pages of each respective issue (the occasional one won't even leave an email). We do sometimes show a little mercy when it comes to some submissions, but don't forget other people are involved here so you want to look your best.

Here are the Top 5 Things Not To Do when submitting your work to SuperMassiveBlackHole:

5) Do NOT be overly friendly in your email - acting professional and keeping to the point is not a crime, it is expected of anyone who wants to be taken seriously. So writing an email that sounds more like a diary entry, or in some cases trying to "charm" the editor won't go down well.

4) Do NOT try to use the opportunity to submit an entire portfolio of your work from 1997 to the present - if you want the editor to choose from a collection of images you better pay him, and pay him well.

3) Do NOT submit work for a themed issue after a deadline has expired. The deadline is there for a reason - to prevent the editor from having heart and/or panic attacks. If you miss a deadline, wait for another issue with a theme that suits you.

2) Do NOT send work that looks like you just thought about it for 30 seconds and took the photo on your camera phone that morning. Thoughtless work looks thoughtless. You may find that little grainy image interesting on you phone screen, but pretending it is somehow "experimental" won't wash with the editor.

And the main point is...

1) Do NOT send an email with one untitled, unsized image attached, that clearly has nothing to do with the theme, and just your name in the text field. There is a page on the website called SUBMISSION GUIDELINES and guess what? It has all the SUBMISSION GUIDELINES for you to follow. They aren't there to fill a space or look pretty, so if you don't even try to follow them it says you are not that interested in the magazine.

SuperMassiveBlackHole was invited by the Irish Museum of Contemporary Art to present a special exhibit as part of The New Living Art exhibition 2010.
As part of this inaugural exhibition SuperMassiveBlackHole presents Time in Hand, a photographic installation featuring the work of five selected artists from the magazine. By using found objects, temporary constructions and momentary interventions, Time in Hand challenges the nature of the photographic subject and questions our relationship with the material world. This original and engaging approach is made all the more exciting by the individual artists shared appreciation for the playful and the poetic.

Images: Up to three images. Should be 300 DPI and at least 1200 pixels on widest side. Save them as RGB, JPEG files on setting 12 (do not optimize).

Statement: All images and projects should be accompanied by a Statement relevant to the specific submission. Should be no more than 200 words long and contained in Email body.

Bio: Should be no more than 100 words long and contained in Email body.

Contact: Email and website address, city and country, should be included in Email body.

Writing: We are also interested in any writing on photographic practices or subjects, reviews of an exhibition, book or website. Submissions should not exceed 1000 words, and should be Emailed along with a Bio and Contact details.

Rencontres Internationales - Call for Entries

The call for entries is open until July 10, 2010, for the ‘Rencontres Internationales’ that will take place in Paris at the Centre Pompidou from 25 November to 4 December 2010, and in Madrid and Berlin in 2011. Any individual or organization can submit one or several proposals. The call for entries is open to film, video and multimedia proposals, without any restrictions for length or genre. All submissions are free, regardless of geographical origin. Works proposed to the “Rencontres Internationales” must not have been previously publicly shown in Paris. See website for full details.

The Julia Dean Photo Workshops is pleased to announce The 2010 Berenice Abbott Prize for an Emerging Photographer. One person is selected for this prize and is given a one-person, all expenses paid exhibition at a prestigious LA gallery (TBA), plus a Canon EOS50D/E 28-135 Kit. Juried by David Fahey of Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles.

What constitutes an Emerging Photographer? An emerging photographer does not mean a young photographer, though a young photographer can certainly enter. Rather, it means that you have an accomplished body of work that has not yet been exhibited or published widely.

Whether a fine art photographer or documentary photographer, the work submitted for this contest should reflect a cohesive body of work. Focus#3: John Darwell 'Not Starting From Here'

For this issue’s Focus artist we were delighted to have John Darwell present his series Not Starting From Here, which features encounters along the Cumbria coastline (home of the Lake District) in the most north western county in England. Darwell travels from the northerly point of the coast to the counties southerly most point, with the only limitation he set himself being that whenever he took a photograph he had to be able to see the sea somewhere within his field of view. His journey brings the viewer along the coast as if on a guided tour, where one is introduced to local characters and places, pausing to take in the stunning natural scenery and observe the flow of daily life.

Focus#2: Daniel Everett: 'Departure'

Our second Focus artist was Daniel Everett, a photographer based in the United States who presented Departure, a series of 9 selected images from his ongoing project based on the non-places identified with transience and quite literally human 'departures'. What initially seem to be film sets and staged environments we soon realise are familiar spaces we have all encountered at different times - usually populated with busy traffic and noise - but not here. Everett's use of light and space, his photographing at times when each place is devoid of human contact beyond that of the photographer himself show an otherworldy side to the everyday...

Focus #1: Eyal Pinkas 'Mitosis'

Our first Focus artist was Eyal Pinkas, a photographer based in Israel who presented Mitosis, a series of 11 images based on the scientific understanding of the biological phase in cell development(Mitosis is the process by which a eukaryotic cell separates the chromosomes in its cell nucleus into two identical sets in two nuclei). Using an everyday object such as a deck chair, Eyal has reconstructed the object according to the logic of Mitosis, producing these enigmatic monochrome photographs which seem all the more dramatic by the stark studio lighting against the chairs black fabric skin and black metalic bones...

Theme for Issue#4 announced

The Theme for the next issue of SuperMassiveBlackHole will be 'Politics & Public Space'.

Non-places, public buildings, green areas, (un)pedestrianised streets, how we use our public spaces and how public spaces use us. Do some spaces and buildings demand a change in our behaviour? Are these behaviours visible to our cameras? These are just some ways of reading this theme. As usual it is up to the individual's personal reading of the theme as to how they choose work to submit.

Happy Days!

Well Christmas is finally here and 2009 draws to an end. We've had a very busy but brilliant 2009 with the launch and continued publication of SuperMassiveBlackHole. Three issues in one year have featured 41 artists from 20 countries (Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa).

We have been noticed by a few blogs and sites and have swapped links with established magazines like Fraction, F-stop and Daylight not to mention our contributors' personal sites. Setting up a MySpace and Facebook profile has also helped promote the magazine. Words like 'brave' and 'interesting' have even been used to describe us! In 2010 we would love to build on all this and help push the title and the artists involved even further.

Photography has many faces and we think we have shown various examples of these. From performance, installation and sculpture documentation to documentary and conceptual photography. Straightforward photography remains the backbone of the publication and we look forward to seeing more fantastic images from around the world.

Though our themes might change, our goals remain the same. And as ever we see SuperMassiveBlackHole as a collaboration with all those artists out there willing to show their work to a wider audience through the internet.

While we want to see artists' video works, the magazine will be produced in PDF format.
This means we are unable to show a video in real time, but we will accept video STILLS and of course a short blurb about the work.

SuperMassiveBlackHole magazine is accepting submissions for its upcoming issue. Submissions are open for the sections

Theme: Construction (between 1-3 images, JPG, 300 DPI, 1200 px on widest side)

Exhibit: reviews of any photography books or websites, exhibitions or performances (no more than 1000 words, RTF/Word file)

Play: artists projects/experiments/ideas – open subject and design (no more than 8 pages)

Please include Bio (100 words), Statement (200 words) and Contact details (including country) in the main body of your Email. Only Email submissions will be accepted.

Submission guidelines

SuperMassiveBlackHole accepts almost anything involved with the photographic process, from straight photography to video, performance documentation to written treatments (see About). All submissions should be sent via Email (contact the Editor for exceptionally large files).

Images: Should be 300 DPI and at least 1200 pixels on widest side. Save them as RGB, JPEG files on setting 12 (do not optimize).

Text: Should be no more than 1000 words long and saved as RTF or Word file.

Statement: All images and projects should be accompanied by a Statement relevant to the specific submission. Should be no more than 200 words long and contained in Email body.

Bio: Should be no more than 100 words long and contained in Email body.

Contact: Email and website address, city and country, should be included in Email body.

SuperMassiveBlackHole understands that some projects and works involve both images and text, and may necessitate a compromise when it comes to submission guidelines. In this case (if it is crucial to the piece) a reasonable resolution will be at the discretion of the Editor. The Editor has the final say in all cases.

SuperMassiveBlackHole is free to all and as such reaps no financial reward through publication; unfortunately no payment can be offered to the individuals published in its pages, other than the free publicity each Contributor gains as a result of a successful submission. Any support, in any shape or form is greatly appreciated.
